Now Accepting Applications for the 2027-2028 Leadership Class

As the most venerated and longstanding of AUA’s leadership initiatives, the AUA Leadership Program is designed for urologists who have demonstrated leadership skills within organized medicine and who

wish to further develop these skills to become the AUA leaders of tomorrow. This highly competitive program selects applicants from each AUA Section to participate in a year-long program that includes a leadership training weekend, group projects with mentors, participation in the Annual Urology Advocacy Summit, networking events at the AUA Annual Meeting and more.

Eligibility: To be eligible, participants must be urologists certified by the American Board of Urology (or equivalent certifying board), 15 years or less out of

training, and have demonstrated leadership skills and an interest in developing these skills to serve their Sections and the AUA as future volunteer leaders. The participants must also be Active members of the AUA and the AUA Section where they live and practice.

Selection Process: Applications are submitted through the ProposalCentral platform. The application requires an essay (500 words or less) explaining why you should be selected for the Leadership Program, as well as a current Curriculum Vitae. Applicants are also required to provide two references (AUA members who are in good standing of the AUA, who can attest to leadership abilities, reside within the geographical Section of the applicant, and will be providing letters of recommendation on the applicant’s behalf.). Applications must be submitted on or before the application deadline of January 4, 2027.

Once submitted, applications are forwarded to the applicant’s Section for review and selection. Selected participants will be notified in March 2027.

Costs: Travel and hotel costs for the Leadership Training Weekend and AUA Summit will be covered by the AUA and billed back to the local Section. Travel and hotel costs for the AUA Annual Meeting will be covered by each participant.

Requirements/Activities: The program requires a commitment of in-person meetings, as well as

participation in calls and virtual meetings throughout the year-long program. The following activities for the AUA Leadership Program are pre-scheduled as part of the program and participation is mandatory for Leadership Class participants and mentors.

May 22, 2027 – Welcome Reception at Annual Meeting – San Diego, CA

During the 2027 AUA Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA, a Welcome Reception/Social Event will be held to formally announce and welcome the incoming Leadership Class. Past graduates, mentors and other AUA leadership are also invited to attend this event for an evening of networking and camaraderie.

July 23-25, 2027 – Leadership Training Weekend – AUA Headquarters, Linthicum, MD

The Leadership Training Weekend provides two days of interactive, leadership development training and the opportunity to learn about the structure, governance and strategic initiatives of the AUA. This unique weekend also offers the opportunity for teams to connect and work on their Capstone Projects, as well as enjoy fun-filled activities, like an off-site dinner and entertainment.

Summer/Fall 2027 – Group Projects/Conference Calls/Exclusive Leadership Program Virtual Events

Leadership teams will connect throughout the summer on their group projects. AUA will also hold exclusive virtual events for the Leadership Class, including sessions with Journal editors and key AUA physician leadership.

February/March 2028 – Annual Urology Advocacy Summit & Capstone Presentations

This dynamic conference will feature two days of in-depth educational and trending policy sessions, followed by a day of agency and Capitol Hill meetings. The event will leave Leadership Program participants feeling empowered and well-versed in advocating for policy matters that impact our practices, patients and the future of urology. On the day before the Summit each team will present their Capstone Projects to a panel of judges made up of the AUA Board of Directors. The presentations will be judged and a first- and second-place winner will be announced that evening at a special dinner.

May 20, 2028 – Graduation Ceremony at Annual Meeting – New Orleans, LA

The culmination of the Leadership Program experience, this reception honors participants for their accomplishments. Members of the AUA Board of Directors, along with mentors and graduates from previous Leadership Program classes, will be present for this event.
